India vs England first T20I washed out
The opening T20I at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday ended in a no-result after persistent rain prevented England from beginning their chase.India had posted a competitive 189/7 in 20 overs before heavy rain arrived at the end of the innings. Although players waited until the cut-off time for a possible five-over contest, the rain did not ease and the umpires eventually abandoned the match.
India’s batters shine
Despite losing Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan inside the first two overs, India recovered through an aggressive partnership between Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer.Abhishek smashed 59 off just 24 balls, becoming the fastest Indian to score a T20I fifty in England. During his knock, he also became the fastest batter to hit 100 sixes in T20Is, reaching the milestone in 785 deliveries, bettering the previous record held by West Indies opener Evin Lewis (789 deliveries).Iyer anchored the innings with 68 off 47 balls, registering his first half-century as India’s T20I captain.Shivam Dube then provided the late fireworks, smashing an unbeaten 42 off 21 balls as India added 54 runs in the final five overs to finish on 189/7.For England, Saqib Mahmood impressed with three wickets, while Sam Curran picked up one wicket and also effected Axar Patel’s run-out off the final ball of the innings. With the first match washed out, both teams will now look to gain the upper hand in the second T20I in Manchester.
