A woman’s post on X has gone viral after she claimed she lost her job just hours after informing her manager that she was pregnant. According to her, all she wanted was permission to carry a few crackers during her shift to deal with severe morning sickness. Instead, she says, she received a termination letter. The woman, who posts under the name “Jin,” shared screenshots of the exchange online. One image showed the message she sent to her manager, while the other appeared to be the termination notice she received around three hours later. In her message, Jin explained that she had recently found out she was pregnant and had been struggling with constant nausea. She said her stomach had become extremely sensitive and that even going slightly hungry made her feel sick. To manage her symptoms while working, she politely asked if she could bring crackers to snack on during her shift.Rather than the understanding she was hoping for, Jin alleges she was sent a formal email titled “Termination of employment.” The letter informed her that her employment would end after a one-week notice period, with the company citing her failure to pass probation as the reason for dismissal. The notice also stated that she would receive payment for any accrued holiday and outstanding wages in her final salary, with all remaining payments to be settled once her employment ended.
‘I trusted this manager’
In a follow-up post, Jin said what hurt the most was that she had shared the news because she genuinely trusted her manager. She wrote that she had been reluctant to mention the pregnancy but felt she had no choice because her morning sickness had become so severe. She explained that she wasn’t asking for time off or any special treatment, only letting her manager know about a major life event and asking for a small accommodation that would help her get through her shift.“I trusted this manager and I feel so betrayed and stupid for it,” she wrote, adding that she currently has no older figure in her life to support her and had hoped her manager would show some compassion. She later said she had no intention of working her notice period.
Social media reacts
The post quickly attracted thousands of reactions, with many users questioning whether the dismissal was legal. One person wrote, “That’s insane. Are you okay? Is that even legal?”Another was puzzled by the fact that Jin felt she needed permission to bring crackers to work, asking why employees would have to seek approval just to eat a snack during a shift.Responding to the question, Jin explained that her workplace had recently introduced a stricter food policy. According to her, staff were told they could not eat until they had worked six hours and were on their unpaid 20-minute break. She said employees had previously been allowed to grab food from the restaurant throughout their shifts, but the rules had changed. Because of that, she wanted to make sure she wouldn’t be reprimanded for stepping into the hallway every 20 minutes to eat a cracker to keep her nausea under control. Many commenters believed the timing of the dismissal was too much of a coincidence.“This isn’t even subtle anymore. That’s straight-up pregnancy discrimination,” one user wrote, while another urged her to seek legal advice and consider taking action against the company. Others echoed similar sentiments, encouraging her to consult an employment lawyer to understand her rights.
