Jackie, the bald eagle mom watched by millions on the Big Bear Lake nest cam, is recovering at a California rehabilitation facility after being rescued near Dana Point Park. Wildlife experts picked up the injured adult eagle on July 17, days after she vanished from the livestream that has turned her family into a global obsession.The rescue followed a ground scuffle with two younger eagles. Cell phone footage showed the adult flipping onto her back and fighting off the pair with her talons, but she couldn’t fly away — a detail that first tipped off viewers something was wrong. Why officials took days to confirm it was Jackie
Confirming the bird’s identity wasn’t straightforward. Jackie isn’t banded, and Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) noted several visiting eagles have been circling the area lately. But after reviewing newly released photos from the rescue, the nonprofit now believes the injured eagle is their Jackie. She had been missing from the nest cameras for days, while Shadow and their two fledglings, Sandy and Luna, kept appearing on schedule.The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, whose San Dimas Raptor Rescue team handled the pickup, urged patience. Officials said the eagle’s identity and sex hadn’t been formally verified and asked the public to lean on confirmed updates rather than speculation. What caused the injury remains unknown. Rival eagles sometimes move into occupied territory to push out resident pairs, and food theft mid-hunt is another possibility.
What’s next for Jackie, Shadow and the fledglings
FOBBV posted a Monday afternoon update after connecting with the rehab center. “Jackie is stable and they are waiting on diagnostic results that can take several days,” the group wrote, adding that she’s a strong eagle and the community will get through this together. There’s no timeline yet for what recovery looks like.Meanwhile, Shadow has stepped up. FOBBV called him an excellent mate and father, feeding Sandy and Luna while guarding the nest and territory on his own. The two juveniles are close to fledging, which typically happens between 10 and 14 weeks of age.Jackie and Shadow first paired up in 2018 and have weathered plenty — lost eggs, a chick killed in a 2025 snowstorm, and a proposed housing development near their foraging grounds.
