Trichy MP seeks nomination of Srirangam temple for Unesco heritage site
Trichy MP Durai Vaiko with finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman at New Delhi on Wednesday

Trichy: Trichy MP Durai Vaiko on Wednesday met Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi seeking her intervention to initiate the nomination process of the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. He also urged the minister to send a letter of communication to the Tamil Nadu govt for identifying and allocating suitable land for a dry port in Sipcot industrial park in Trichy.“Srirangam can be nominated for UNESCO Heritage Site status in the 2026 cycle itself, instead of the 2027 cycle as indicated by the Union ministry of culture. The recognition will strengthen conservation, promote academic research, and encourage sustainable cultural tourism,” the MDMK MP said. He urged the Union govt to adopt the Mahabodhi Temple Complex model for successfully obtaining the UNESCO status for the Srirangam temple.Regarding the pending dry port demand for Trichy, the MP requested the minister to develop a dry port through an SPV comprising Sipcot and either Chennai Port Authority or VO Chidambaranar Port Authority, Tuticorin. “Exporters will benefit from a dry port in Trichy,” the MP added.
