An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 hit Calabria and sent tremors across southern Italy in the early hours of Tuesday, as reported by an Italian newspaper Il Mattino. The seismic activity occurred at the Tyrrhenian Sea between Amantea and Paola.The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake struck about 10 miles southwest of Saracena, Italy, at 6.12 pm EST.According to the USGS, the earthquake began more than 153 miles below the surface and its surface location was about 23 miles from Cosenza in the Calabria region. Moreover, the tremors began with an intensity of IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale which means people in the area felt noticeable shaking.As per a report by Il Mattino, people in the Naples area also felt the tremors, especially in the Vesuvian area, the city center and the Phlegraean area. Numerous reports also arrived from outside the area, particularly from Potenza and Palermo, where many locals were affected by the tremor.Many social media users residing in the areas such as Cava de’ Tirreni, Sala Consilina, Vallo della Lucania, and the entire Cilento region warned about the earthquake.
