Ludhiana: Extortion calls and death threats originating from Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates have been harassing a Punjabi entertainment producer for 15 days.Harshdeep Singh, a music executive and garment trader who operates under the industry moniker Sammy Oberoi, told investigators the principal caller had identified himself as Kulveer Singh Sidhu and threatened to kill him and his family if he didn’t pay him ₹2 crore.To demonstrate surveillance capability, the extortionist detailed the registration numbers of Harshdeep Singh’s personal vehicles, including the car used to transport his children to school.In an effort to prove his criminal credentials, the suspect claimed responsibility for a recent firearm attack targeting a Canadian café owned by high-profile Indian comedian and television host Kapil Sharma. When the businessman stopped answering the calls, the perpetrator shifted to sending threatening text messages.Assistant sub-inspector Sukhdev Sharma confirmed that a first-information report had been registered under Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which covers extortion.Specialist technicians from the police department’s cybercrime unit have been deployed to trace the digital routing of the international calls.
