Nagpur: From turning traditional weaves into contemporary fashion statements to exploring how artisans can find newer markets, students of LAD College for Women and Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID), Wathoda, celebrated National Handloom Day with a mix of fashion, entrepreneurship and conversations around India’s weaving traditions.Organised under the aegis of the Weavers’ Service Centre, Nagpur, the event brought students and experts together to explore both the cultural legacy and economic potential of the handloom sector.

The highlight of the event was ‘Handloom Sutra — The Walk of Weaves’, a fashion show that turned the ramp into a canvas celebrating India’s textile diversity. LAD College students presented 20 traditional saree draping styles, while SID students followed with prominent regional drapes from different parts of the country.

A panel discussion on ‘Employment and Entrepreneurship Opportunities in the Handloom Sector in Contemporary Times’ was organised, which focused on modernising traditional weaving techniques, developing sustainable fashion ventures and bridging the gap between rural artisans and urban consumers.

Moderated by SID director Meeta Siddhu, the panel featured Harsha Jharia, chief administrative officer of Women’s Education Society, Sandeep Thubrikar, deputy director, Weavers’ Service Centre, Nidhi Gandhi, proprietor of Gandhi Handloom, and Vandana Menon.The programme was inaugurated by Kavita Jadhao, Thubrikar and Siddhu. LAD College principal Pooja Pathak was the guest of honour, while Jharia and Gandhi were special guests. The celebration concluded with an interactive handloom quiz conducted by Thubrikar, with prizes and gifts presented to winning students.
