The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced two significant additions to their hockey operations department to strengthen their front office. The team has reportedly appointed Judd Bracket as their Assistant General Manager, Player Evaluation, and Freddie Hamilton as Chief of Staff. The move is a part of the club’s ongoing effort to strengthen its front-office structure under General Manager John Chayka. Earlier, the club fired head coach Craig Berube on Wednesday, in a major shake-up for the franchise after a disappointing 2025-26 season as the Maple Leafs (32-36-14) ended the season 0-6-1, finishing last in the Atlantic Division and 15th in the Eastern Conference, and missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016-17.
Toronto Maple Leafs hire Judd Brackett and Freddie Hamilton in a major hockey operations role
The Toronto Maple Leafs bolstered their hockey operations with two key executive hires on Monday. The hockey club has appointed Judd Brackett as Assistant General Manager, Player Evaluation, and Freddie Hamilton as Chief of Staff. As per reports, Brackett will oversee player evaluation across both amateur and professional scouting. It is to be noted that the appointments were made under the current GM of the Maple Leafs, John Chayka.As for Brackett’s experience, the NHL reported that he spent five seasons with the Minnesota Wild as Director of Amateur Scouting. He also worked with Team USA at each of the last three IIHF World Junior Championships. Before joining Minnesota, he spent 12 seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, first as an amateur scout before serving five seasons as Director of Amateur Scouting. In addition to this, Hamilton was known as a depth forward and spent significant time in the AHL. He was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft. He played 75 NHL regular-season games between 2013 and 2018 for the San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, and Arizona CoyotesMaking the official announcement, Maple Leafs GM stated in a press release, “We are thrilled to welcome Judd to our organization. He has established one of the strongest amateur scouting and drafting track records in the NHL and has consistently demonstrated an ability to adapt and evolve his approach as the game changes. As we continue to build our hockey operations department, Judd will play a key role in integrating traditional scouting, video analysis, and data-driven insights to strengthen our decision-making process.” Further adding about Freddie Hamilton, who also happens to be an MBA graduate from Yale University, Chayka added, “We are excited to add Freddie to our hockey operations department. Throughout his playing career, Freddie distinguished himself through his character, professionalism, and work ethic. Since retiring, he has built an impressive career in business and finance, gaining valuable experience across investing, strategy, and organizational leadership.“Chayka believes that his diverse background and collaborative approach will make him a valuable addition to the team as they go on to execute key strategic initiatives and strengthen alignment across the hockey operations department.
