India’s electrified vehicle market is expanding beyond pure electric cars, with manufacturers now introducing advanced hybrid technologies. BYD has showcased its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology in India, while JSW MG Motor India recently unveiled the ADAPT platform that will underpin its future EVs and hybrid models. Although both systems combine electric and petrol power, they are built with different approaches and capabilities.
BYD DM-i vs JSW MG India’s ADAPT platform: Details
BYD’s DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology follows an electric-first philosophy. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle is powered primarily by the electric motor, with the petrol engine stepping in only when extra power is required or the battery needs recharging. BYD claims the system can deliver a combined driving range of over 1,200 km, while fuel consumption is rated at 4.8 litres per 100 km under the NEDC test cycle. The system is built around BYD’s 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine, which has a claimed thermal efficiency of 43.04 per cent. It supports multiple operating modes, including full EV mode, series hybrid mode where the engine acts as a generator, and parallel hybrid mode where both the engine and electric motor work together. The technology is paired with BYD’s Blade Battery.MG ADAPT, on the other hand, is a modular vehicle platform rather than a single hybrid system. Claimed to be India’s first Multi New Energy Vehicle (NEV) architecture, it has been developed to support electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and range extender electric vehicles on the same platform. JSW MG has also confirmed that one EV and one PHEV based on ADAPT will be launched by FY2026-27.At the heart of MG ADAPT is an integrated hybrid powertrain that combines a dedicated hybrid engine, a dedicated battery system, a 10-in-1 Intelligent Electric Drive Unit and what the company describes as the world’s first Electromagnetic Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. The platform automatically switches between four drive modes: Pure Electric Drive, Series Hybrid Drive, Parallel Hybrid Drive and Engine Direct Drive, depending on road and driving conditions.Another key difference is MG ADAPT’s support for REEV technology. In this configuration, the electric motor always powers the wheels, while the petrol engine functions only as a generator to recharge the battery, extending the driving range without directly driving the vehicle. BYD’s DM-i, meanwhile, focuses on plug-in hybrid technology where the engine can also assist in powering the wheels when required.
