'Don't have time to watch videos': Supreme Court declines plea for suo motu action on Jantar Mantar protest

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to take suo motu cognisance of the students’ protest at Jantar Mantar, refusing to entertain a plea alleging “police brutality” during the demonstration.A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined the request, saying, “We do not have time to watch videos.”An advocate urged the court to initiate suo motu proceedings over the protest and alleged that police had used excessive force against students. He also offered to submit videos purportedly showing the alleged police brutality.His remarks came after a protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday saw roads blocked with demonstrators in the national capital. Police barricades were broken and protestors faced lathi and tear gas, with both accusing each other of going rogue.
