HYDERABAD: A growing number of patients are reporting skin damage linked to fairness creams purchased online and over-the-counter (OTC), raising concerns over the presence of harmful ingredients such as mercury, lead and undeclared steroids.The concern has intensified after regulatory authorities flagged certain fairness creams for containing toxic levels of heavy metals.Skin specialists said these products, widely sold through ecommerce websites and social media platforms, are causing a range of problems, including burning sensation, acne-like eruptions, pigmentation changes and increased facial sensitivity.In one instance, a 28-yearold software professional from Hyderabad recently visited a dermatologist after using a fairness cream bought online for nearly four months.Initially pleased with the ‘instant glow’, she later developed a persistent burning sensation on her cheeks, painful acne-like eruptions and dark patches that worsened after she stopped using the cream. Dr Karishni Chittarvu, dermatologist and former general secretary of the Telangana Senior Residents Doctors Association (TSRDA), said she treated two patients who complained of burning sensation on the cheeks, acneiform eruptions and worsening pigmentation.
Unsafe levels of mercury
After 18 women in Nagpur developed severe kidney issues linked to these creams, in early July, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration banned several illegally imported fairness creams.The tests revealed that these creams contained mercury and lead levels up to 752 times the permissible limit.
Beware of toxic ingredients
“Mercury is illegally added to block melanin production for a rapid whitening effect. Prolonged use is toxic and has been linked to kidney failure, severe nerve disorders, and skin damage,” said a Telangana DCA official.Skin specialists highlighted that many fairness and skin-lightening creams marketed online promise rapid skin lightening but often contain potent steroids or other undeclared ingredients that temporarily suppress pigmentation.“People should avoid creams that do not clearly disclose their ingredients or regulatory approvals,” said Dr Jalgam Vijay, consultant dermatologist and former coopted member of the legal and anti-quackery committee of the Telangana Medical Council.They also highlighted easy availability of such creams online has made self-medication common.“Skin pigmentation is a medical condition and should be evaluated by a qualified dermatologist,” Dr Rajetha Damisetty, senior dermatologist and chairperson of the anti-quackery committee for the IADVL.“Beauty product endorsements by doctors or celebrities should be discouraged, as they may encourage people to buy and use skin products online without consulting a dermatologist, leading to harmful effects,” said Dr Vijay.
