The Commonwealth Games has often been viewed as a step below the Olympics and World Championships, but Neeraj Chopra believes that perception no longer applies to men’s javelin.

Speaking ahead of his season-opening appearance at the Doha Diamond League, the Indian superstar pointed out that several athletes expected to compete in Glasgow have already crossed the 90-metre mark. With Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage among the elite throwers currently dominating headlines, Chopra believes the competition level will be exceptionally high.

“All of them have thrown 90m, so the Commonwealth Games will not be less (competitive) than the Olympics or World Championships; it will be a really tough competition,” Chopra said.

The statement reflects how dramatically the event has evolved. Nadeem owns the Olympic gold medal and record, while Pathirage arrives as the current world leader after a sensational 92.62m effort earlier this month. For Chopra, reclaiming the Commonwealth title he won in Gold Coast in 2018 may be far more challenging than many expect.
