Rain lashes parts of Delhi; IMD issues 'yellow alert'

NEW DELHI: Rain lashed several parts of Delhi on Monday, bringing relief from days of hot and humid. The IMD forecast more showers and issued a yellow alert for Tuesday and Wednesday, with heavy rain likely at isolated places on Tuesday.Weather experts had earlier attributed the dry spell to a “break monsoon condition” caused by the monsoon trough shifting away from the region. However, they had forecast rainfall over the next two to three days as the trough moves south towards Delhi and surrounding areas, accompanied by a shift in winds from dry westerlies to moisture-laden easterlies. On Sunday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.3 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 31 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal. High humidity levels between 50% and 70% pushed the heat index to as high as 45.5 degrees Celsius, making conditions feel significantly hotter.Meanwhile, the city’s air quality remained in the “moderate” category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 171 on Sunday.
