Ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli and Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu are working on their mega time travelling action thriller ‘Varanasi’. However, when the title of the film was unveiled it led to a controversy as the title was already registered with the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce by director Subba Reddy. Now, the makers seem to have resolved the issue.
‘Varanasi’ title issue comes to an end
As per a report by Cinema Express, on Thursday, Subba Reddy officially handed over the title rights of ‘Varanasi’ to producer KL Narayana. He did not accept any money for giving away the title.

According to the report, Subba Reddy shared that he had registered the title name in 2023 under his production banner. He further mentioned that he started developing a story around it as well. However, after learning that SS Rajamouli wanted the same title for his film, he has now decided to give it up.He said, “It is an honour to contribute, even in a small way, to such a landmark project featuring my favourite actor Mahesh Babu, director SS Rajamouli, and producer KL Narayana.” He also added, “A title is an emotion for me. It’s not meant to be sold. I was happy to give the title for a good film.”Former Directors’ Association president Veera Shankar said Subba Reddy was emotionally attached to the title at first, which is why they did not approach him immediately.He said, “Later, when we explained that the title was needed for Rajamouli and KL Narayana’s film and that it would send a positive message across the industry, Subba Reddy readily agreed.”
About ‘Varanasi’
The film is being mounted on a high scale which revolves around Rudra played by Mahesh Babu. He will be locking horns with Prithviraj Sukumaran as the main antagonist of the story Kumbha. Meanwhile, Priyanka Chopra gears up for her much awaited comeback with an India film, playing Mandakini.‘Varanasi’ is set to release on August 7, 2027.
