On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse (surya grahan) will take place in different parts of the world. The Hindu tradition regards a solar eclipse as a sensitive time. During Grahan, many families have special rules, particularly for pregnant women.According to Panchang, the Solar Eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026 on the Amavasya tithi of the Sawan month.According to IST, the eclipse will begin at 9:04 PM on the night of 12 August and will end at 4:25 AM on the morning of 13 August. It must be noted that as the eclipse will not be visible in India, Sutak will not be applicable here. Still, some families may choose to take basic, conventional precautions to establish a sense of peace.
Stay Calm and Rest
The most important thing is to stay calm. Emotional stability during pregnancy is important. If your family follows the Grahan rules, you can relax in a neat, calm room. Have water. Breathe slowly, sit comfortably, and do not engage in excessive contemplation.
Avoid Looking at the Eclipse
If you live in an area where the eclipse is visible, do not look directly at the sun.If you plan on watching the eclipse, it’s best to wear the correct solar eclipse glasses. Do not view directly through plain glass, mobile cameras, or standard sunglasses.
Avoid Sharp Objects as Per Tradition
Pregnant women are advised not to use knives, scissors, needles or any sharp objects during Grahan. This is a traditional belief for protection and caution purposes. If your family adopts this policy, you will be free of heavy kitchen chores, cutting and stitching during the eclipse period. It should be seen as a break, not as something to panic about.
Keep Food Simple
In Sutak and Grahan, some families do not cook or eat food. Sutak will not be followed in India for this eclipse, so there is no need for strict food rules. But pregnant women shouldn’t go hungry for long. Eat your food as your doctor tells you to. Light, fresh and simple meals are better than stress or fasting.
Chant Mantras or Pray
During the time of the eclipse, you can chant the ‘Gayatri Mantra ’ and ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ to bring about peace.Prayer can help lessen fear and keep the mind steady.
Take a Bath After Grahan if You Follow Tradition
After the eclipse, some families take a bath and clean the puja area. This is a common practice in tradition. If pregnant women are comfortable, they can move forward with caution.Avoid strenuous activities.
