UTTARKASHI: A worker died in a rockfall inside the under-construction 4.5-km Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand, prompting concerns over safety measures at the project site.Speaking to TOI, Shriram, the tunnel project manager, stated that a laborer died after being struck by falling rocks while working inside the tunnel. The laborer has been identified as 22-year-old Naresh, a native of Jharkhand.The incident has triggered protests among workers, who questioned the safety protocols being followed during construction.The tunnel had witnessed a major accident in November 2023, when 41 workers were trapped for 17 days after a section of the tunnel collapsed. They were rescued following a prolonged operation.Following the latest incident, Nagal village head Arvind Bhatt said the recurring accidents have raised questions about the quality of construction and safety standards at the tunnel project.
