Zohran Mamdani defends Taylor Swift's wedding as Republicans question $160K NYPD security costs

Turns out love is expensive, but so are a hundred-plus NYPD officers on overtime, and Taylor Swift picked up that tab herself. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed on Friday that Swift paid the city over $160,000 to cover the police permit and security response for her wedding to Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden. The clarification comes after Republicans publicly questioned whether taxpayers would end up footing the bill for the star-studded event.

Zohran Mamdani confirms Taylor Swift, not taxpayers, covered wedding police costs

Asked directly whether Swift would reimburse the city for police overtime, Mamdani didn’t hesitate. “Taylor Swift has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event,” he said, adding the permit was finalized just days before the wedding itself. The $160K covered the city permit required for street closures and traffic management around MSG, plus the NYPD’s beefed-up presence for the weekend. The wedding, which took place across July 2–3, pulled in more than 1,000 guests including Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Ciara and Fergie, who all performed at the ceremony. Streets around Madison Square Garden were shut down, NDAs were reportedly mandatory, and phones were banned at the door. So basically, a level of security you’d expect for a head of state, not a pop star’s wedding. Given the wedding’s estimated eight-figure price tag, $160,000 is genuinely pocket change for Swift, but the confirmation matters politically, it kills the “taxpayers are subsidizing Taylor Swift’s love life” narrative before it could spiral.

Why this became a political flashpoint in the first place

This wasn’t just a stray question, it came after Republicans raised a stink about who’d be covering NYPD overtime for a private billionaire’s wedding, especially with Mamdani, a democratic socialist, in the mayor’s seat. The irony of “Communist Mamdani” personally defending a billionaire pop star’s expenditure wasn’t lost on anyone, and clips of him fielding the question have been making the rounds. Mamdani also used the moment to point out that NYC’s summer has been unusually packed with big events, whether it’s the Knicks’ first championship in 53 years, the FIFA World Cup, or America’s 250th birthday, meaning the city’s had to get selective about what it says yes to. Swift’s wedding, apparently, made the cut, and now it’s made her bank account $160,000 lighter too. Small price for eternal love (and Paul McCartney as your wedding singer).
