A landmark global study tracking over 5,600 people across 23 countries has found that the “eight glasses a day” rule has no scientific basis, with actual water needs swinging from under two litres to more than ten depending on age, activity and climate.The research, led by scientists at the University of Aberdeen and published in the journal Science, is the largest of its kind to measure how much water the human body actually uses rather than relying on people’s memory of what they drank. And the findings are blunt. The recommended intake of two litres of water a day rarely matches our actual needs and in many situations is too high.So where did the eight glasses idea even come from? Turns out, nobody really knows for sure. The 8-glasses figure traces back to a 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation of 2.5 litres a day, and that number was never grounded in actual research to begin with. Somewhere along the way, people forgot that the board also expected most of that water to come from food, not from a glass. Today it survives as one of those health facts nobody questions, mostly because it is easy to remember and sounds responsible.
What the new numbers actually show
Researchers used something called doubly labelled water, a technique borrowed from metabolism research, to track exactly how fast water moves through the body. They gave participants a small dose of water containing a harmless isotope and then measured how quickly it left the system.And the range they found was massive. Men in their twenties and thirties turned over an average of 4.2 litres of water a day, the highest of any group, while men in their nineties averaged just 2.5 litres. Women aged 20 to 40 averaged a turnover of 3.3 litres, which also declined to 2.5 litres by the age of 90. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, athletes, and people living in hot or humid climates all needed more.But turnover is not the same thing as how much you should drink. A big chunk of that water comes from food, not beverages. Fruits and vegetables are mostly water. A carrot, for what it’s worth, is close to 90 percent water, and so is broccoli. So when researchers accounted for that, they landed on a far more modest number for actual drinking water. Around 1.5 to 1.8 litres a day for most people, not the 2 litres that eight glasses works out to.Dale Schoeller, an emeritus professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison who has studied water and metabolism for decades, put it plainly. He said the science never actually supported the old eight glasses guideline as an appropriate one to begin with. It confused total water turnover, he explained, with water from drinks alone, ignoring how much comes from the plate.
Why a single number never made sense
This is really the heart of the story. Hydration is not one-size-fits-all, and experts working in this space have been saying so for a while. Rebecca Stearns, chief operating officer at the Korey Stringer Institute at the University of Connecticut, said hydration is highly individual, and that fluid needs shift based on body size, fitness, sweat rate and where you live. So the same person could need different amounts on different days, depending on heat, humidity or how hard they trained that morning.IncThat is a big departure from the old advice, which asked everyone from a teenager in Delhi’s summer heat to a retiree in a cooler climate to hit the same daily target. It never made much physiological sense, and now there is hard data to back that up.None of this means drinking eight glasses is dangerous, though. Doctors are quick to point out that healthy kidneys simply flush out whatever the body does not need. So if eight glasses feels right and works for you, there is no harm in sticking with it. The bigger takeaway is that there is no universal magic number everyone should be chasing, and thirst, urine colour, activity levels and climate are far better guides than a fixed glass count copied from a decades old chart.For most people going about an ordinary day in a moderate climate, drinking when thirsty and eating a normal mix of fruits, vegetables and other water rich foods is enough to stay properly hydrated. The eight glasses rule was never really about science. It was about a number that was easy to remember. Turns out your body was never reading from the same script.
