IMD warns of heavy rain and storms across these Indian states as monsoon advances; what travellers need to know
Heavy rainfall in the city

Travellers looking to hit the road in India over the next week should probably check the weather frequently. The India Meteorological Department, or IMD, says there’ll be widespread rainfall, storms, strong winds, and even some local flooding in popular destinations. The latest All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued on June 4 indicates that the southwest monsoon is continuing its gradual advance, bringing rain-bearing conditions to large parts of southern and northeastern India while severe weather warnings remain in place for several hill states and coastal destinations.According to IMD, parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Bay of Bengal will see the monsoon roll in within the next day. While the arrival of the monsoon is welcome news for many regions after a long summer, it also signals the beginning of weather-related travel challenges, particularly in destinations prone to landslides, flooding and transport disruptions.

The heaviest rains will hit southern India, especially Kerala and Mahe. These areas will get heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout most of the upcoming week. Karnataka isn’t safe either; it’s facing long periods of heavy rain, particularly along the coast and inland.Popular monsoon tourism spots like Coorg, Chikmagalur, Wayanad, Munnar, and the Western Ghats will probably experience intense showers. This means they’ll likely face low visibility and tough road conditions. People planning trips there need to prepare for those challenges.Konkan and Goa are also likely to receive heavy rainfall during the first half of the forecast period and again around June 8 and 9. Even though the monsoons turn Goa green and lush, it comes with downed roads and delays in travel plans. So, expect problems with ferry services and other coastal activities due to rough seas. The northeastern states will stay among the wettest regions in the country. Hefty rains are predicted for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for several days next week. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram in Meghalaya, known for their monsoons, might see especially intense downpours. People planning trips to the Northeast need to watch out for landslides, blocked roads, and delays on mountain routes.Travellers should exercise caution for similar reasons in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim until June 9. Tourism destinations there could deal with disruptions like slick roads, poor visibility, and small landslides. In northern India, the weather’s making things tricky right now. There’s a western disturbance hitting the western Himalayan area, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hail. On June 4th, Uttarakhand is expecting heavy rain, and there will be more hail in some parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh until June 5th.For people heading out for pilgrimages or treks, places like Mussoorie, Nainital, Shimla, and Dharamshala might be tougher to enjoy. The roads up in the mountains can get really dangerous with landslides and falling rocks during all that bad weather.Even the national capital region and areas in northwest India aren’t spared. Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan will face their own stormy times, with lightning, thunder, and pretty fierce winds—clocking in at 50 to 60 kmph. This might mess up flights and train services, and drivers need to watch out on the highways.Central India is expected to see some thunderstorms and strong winds, especially in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. Parts of Madhya Pradesh might even see hailstorms, which could make road trips and outdoor fun tough. While a lot of places gear up for rainy weather, areas in eastern India are bracing for extreme heat. The India Meteorological Department warns that Bihar will be under heatwave conditions from June 5 to 9. Western Uttar Pradesh could also experience heatwave conditions by June 8 and 9.This stark difference between heavy monsoon rains in one part and sweltering heat elsewhere shows how complex India’s early monsoon period can be. If you’re travelling through various parts of the country, you could run into wildly different weather very quickly.
