Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been banned from tennis for four years after refusing to take an anti-doping test at her home in December 2025. The decision was announced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) following a ruling from an independent tribunal.Vondrousova, who won Wimbledon in 2023, argued that she refused the test because she feared for her safety and suffered what she described as an “acute stress reaction.” At the time, she said she had been dealing with months of physical and mental pressure and reacted out of fear when someone arrived at her home late at night.However, the ITIA said the doping control officer properly identified herself and followed the required procedures. The agency also stated that Vondrousova signed a document confirming that she had refused the test. After reviewing the case, the tribunal imposed the maximum four-year suspension.The ruling is significant because anti-doping authorities treat a refusal to take a test in the same way as a positive test result. According to the ITIA, this approach is necessary to prevent athletes from avoiding sanctions simply by refusing to be tested. The decision leaves Vondrousova facing a lengthy absence from the sport during what would normally be some of the most important years of her career.

Karen Moorhouse, chief executive officer of the ITIA, said player safety and the welfare of testing officers remain a priority during the testing process. She explained that testing officers are professionally trained, carry identification, and that players can verify their identity if they have concerns.The ITIA also confirmed that Vondrousova submitted medical evidence relating to a psychological condition during the proceedings. Despite that evidence, the independent tribunal ruled against the former Wimbledon champion and upheld the four-year sanction.The agency added that out-of-competition testing is an important part of protecting clean sport and can take place at any time and location.Vondrousova was 26 when the suspension was announced and will be 30 by the time she becomes eligible to return. A four-year absence from professional tennis presents a major challenge for any player, particularly at the highest level of the sport. Whether she can successfully return and compete with the world’s best players remains one of the biggest questions following the ruling.
