Noida: A moderate spell of rain on Tuesday afternoon threw traffic out of gear across Noida and Ghaziabad, with waterlogging slowing vehicles on several arterial roads and stranding schoolchildren on their way home.Noida recorded 56 mm of rainfall by 5.30 pm, with intense waterlogging reported near Mahamaya flyover, Chilla, and in sectors 37, 34 and 100. In Sector 19 and Barola, children were seen wading through knee-deep sewage-mixed water.A car stranded in the underpass near Mahamaya flyover between the furniture market and Sector 94 triggered tailbacks around 3 pm. Commuters waded through knee-deep water to push the vehicle to the roadside and clear the jam.

The DSC Road stretch between Botanical Garden and GIP Mall, Sector 62 and NH-9 — among the city’s usual waterlogging spots — also remained flooded. A nearly 50-metre section of the central verge next to the Blue Line’s Sector 16 metro station collapsed amid the showers. Traffic police and Noida Authority teams rushed to the spot to regulate movement, and the authority said repair work was under way.
Intense waterlogging in Sector 62
Traffic on NH-9 was further disrupted after a truck broke down near Sector 62. Akhil Kumar, a commuter, shared a Google Maps screenshot on X showing a long red-marked stretch. “This is the situation on a high-speed corridor,” he said. Police later removed the truck and restored traffic flow.Residential sectors also reported flooding. Laxmi Narain of Sector 19 alleged inadequate drain maintenance. “We faced severe waterlogging on Tuesday. The arrangements for sump well operations and the deployment of pumps in affected areas proved inadequate,” he said.Noida Authority CEO Krishna Karunesh, meanwhile, sacked junior engineer Parth Rathore and supervisor Mange Ram for negligence and failing to address waterlogging in Barolla village. The CEO also pulled up two other officials, noting adverse entries against manager (civil) Karan Singh Tyagi and manager (water and sewer) Ramendra for failing to control the waterlogging in the area.

The Authority also imposed a Rs 5 lakh fine on the contractor and served a show-cause notice seeking clarification on why it should not be blacklisted for poor-quality civic work. “Negligence at any level in resolving public grievances will not be tolerated. We have directed all officials and employees to ensure timely resolution of waterlogging and other basic civic issues,” he said.Noida Authority general managers SP Singh, RP Singh and AK Arora inspected waterlogged areas across the city following the rain.In Greater Noida, Tilapta Main Road was submerged for several hours, slowing traffic considerably. “The road is waterlogged after every bout of rain and what should otherwise be a 10-minute commute often extends beyond 30 to 40 minutes. This has become a recurrent problem, but despite repeated complaints, there has been no lasting solution,” Mukesh Kumar, a resident, said.

In Ghaziabad, traffic police issued an advisory as traffic crawled on NH-9 from UP Gate to Pratap Vihar. Waterlogging was also reported across trans-Hindon areas and parts of the old city, including Shastri Nagar, Meerut tri-section and Mariyam Nagar.School buses were seen wading through waterlogged streets near Mariyam Nagar, close to Pratap Vihar. A major traffic jam hit the area around 3 pm, with schoolchildren seen heading home drenched in three-wheelers. Continuous drizzle through the day aggravated the problem, an official said.

The local weather station recorded 19 mm of rainfall at Hindon IAF base, 21.4 mm in Kamla Nehru Nagar and 34.5 mm at Ghaziabad tehsil.Municipal commissioner Vikramaditya Singh Malik told TOI that the civic body deployed 55 suction pumps at waterlogging hotspots. “An additional 25 suction pumps were installed in areas from where our quick response team (QRT) reported flooding. Among the worst-hit areas were Arthala underpass, Nandgram, Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda metro station, Meerut Road,” he said.
