Prayagraj: Continuing its crackdown on the mafia and gangsters, the Prayagraj police on Tuesday attached properties worth around Rs 110 crore belonging to slain don-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed under the Gangsters Act.The properties, allegedly accumulated through illegal means and spread across over 20.38 bighas at Mauja Bhiti Taluka Asadullapur and Mauja Kathula Gauspur in Sadar tehsil, were attached in the biggest such action against Atiq’s assets in the district since his killing.A senior police officer told TOI that the investigating officer of Cantt police station, while probing a case registered under the Gangsters Act at Dhoomanganj police station and after compiling the necessary inputs, submitted a report before the court of the Prayagraj police commissioner seeking attachment of the 20.38 bighas of land belonging to Atiq.After verifying records and conducting further investigations, police came to know about prime benami properties of Atiq, which he had allegedly purchased in the name of a person belonging to another community.Following orders from the competent authority, a joint team of police and revenue officials first made a public announcement at the site and then attached the properties. They also installed a board declaring the attachment of the properties at the site, the official added.
