In a landmark child sexual offences case that has rocked Northern Ireland, former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson has been found guilty of 18 offences, including rape, indecent assault and gross indecency, committed against two girls over a period spanning more than two decades.A jury at Newry Crown Court convicted the 63-year-old politician of one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault and four counts of gross indecency for offences committed between 1985 and 2008. Donaldson had denied all charges.Judge Paul Ramsey said the former DUP chief faces a “lengthy” prison sentence, with sentencing expected at a later date.
Dramatic fall of a Unionist heavyweight
The verdict marks a stunning downfall for one of Northern Ireland’s most prominent political figures. Donaldson, who led the DUP from 2021 until his arrest in March 2024, was once regarded as a key architect of unionist politics and played a significant role in post-Brexit negotiations involving Northern Ireland.He resigned from the party and stepped down as an MP immediately after being charged. Knighted in 2016 for services to politics, Donaldson was among the most recognisable figures in British and Northern Irish public life.
Wife found to have aided abuse
The jury also concluded that Donaldson’s wife, Eleanor Donaldson, aided and abetted some of the offences.However, she was deemed unfit to stand trial due to mental health issues. Instead, she faced a “trial of the facts”, a legal process that determines whether the alleged acts occurred but does not result in a criminal conviction.
Victims’ testimonies central to prosecution
The four-week trial heard harrowing accounts from two complainants, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.One victim told the court she had lived for decades with memories of the abuse, while the other described inappropriate sexual behaviour that began when she was still of primary school age.Prosecutors argued that both women had suppressed traumatic memories for years before deciding to approach police in 2024. They maintained the complainants had no motive to fabricate allegations and had shown immense courage in coming forward.A letter written by Donaldson to one complainant, in which he expressed regret for causing “hurt, pain and distress”, was also presented during proceedings. Donaldson insisted the letter was unrelated to the abuse allegations.
Defence questioned lack of forensic evidence
Donaldson’s legal team argued there was no forensic, medical or eyewitness evidence to corroborate the allegations.The defence maintained the case rested largely on the testimony of the complainants and urged jurors not to be influenced by emotion.Prosecutors countered that the passage of time made such evidence unlikely and asked jurors to assess the credibility and consistency of the victims’ accounts.Political leaders praise survivors’ courageFollowing the verdict, political leaders across Northern Ireland paid tribute to the survivors and condemned Donaldson’s actions.Current DUP leader Gavin Robinson said the former party chief must “feel the full force of the law”, describing the abuse as “filthy and vile”.Leaders from across the political spectrum also called for Donaldson to be stripped of his knighthood, while child protection organisations praised the victims for pursuing justice decades after the alleged offences occurred.The case is being seen as one of the most significant child sexual abuse prosecutions involving a senior political figure in Northern Ireland’s recent history, bringing a dramatic end to the public career of a man once considered one of unionism’s most influential voices.
